    Mounjaro 2.5mg Injection

contains Tirzepatide 2.5mg in a once-weekly pre-filled KwikPen, and is the starting dose for Mounjaro therapy. Tirzepatide is the first and only dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist, offering a novel dual-hormone mechanism that produces superior weight loss and glycaemic control compared to GLP-1-only agents.

    Benefits:

    - First-in-class dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist mechanism

    - Initiates treatment with a low dose to improve tolerability

    - Lays the foundation for achieving 20%+ body weight reduction at maintenance doses

    - Improves both fasting and postprandial blood glucose

    - Demonstrated superiority over semaglutide in head-to-head SURMOUNT trials

    How It Works:

Tirzepatide simultaneously activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. GIP receptor activation augments insulin secretion, promotes adipocyte lipid uptake, and reduces GI side effects compared to GLP-1 agonism alone. GLP-1 receptor activation suppresses appetite, slows gastric emptying, and stimulates further insulin secretion. The combined dual-hormone signalling produces greater metabolic effect than either mechanism alone, explaining the superior efficacy of tirzepatide over semaglutide.

    Dosage and Administration:

Inject 2.5mg subcutaneously once weekly for 4 weeks into the abdomen, thigh, or outer upper arm. Can be given at any time of day, with or without meals. Rotate injection sites. After 4 weeks, escalate to 5mg. Each KwikPen delivers a single dose and is then discarded.

    Side Effects:

Common: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, decreased appetite, abdominal discomfort. Injection-site: redness, bruising, pain. Uncommon: headache, increased heart rate, fatigue, dizziness. Serious: pancreatitis, cholelithiasis, diabetic retinopathy complications.

    Precautions:

Contraindicated in personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Use with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis. Monitor for gallbladder disease, especially during rapid weight loss.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is Mounjaro 2.5mg used for?

Mounjaro 2.5mg is the starting dose of tirzepatide used for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with comorbidities, and for glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes. The 2.5mg dose is a tolerability initiation dose only.

Q2: How is Mounjaro different from Wegovy or Ozempic?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) activate only GLP-1 receptors. This dual mechanism gives Mounjaro superior efficacy — clinical trials show average weight loss of 20–22% versus 15% for Wegovy at equivalent trial durations.

Q3: Is 2.5mg tirzepatide enough to lose weight?

The 2.5mg initiation dose is not a therapeutic weight-loss dose. It is designed for tolerability. Weight-loss benefit begins to build as the dose is escalated toward 5mg, 10mg, and 15mg.

Q4: How long do I take Mounjaro 2.5mg before increasing the dose?

Mounjaro 2.5mg is taken for exactly 4 weeks. After that, your prescriber will increase the dose to 5mg, with subsequent escalations every 4 weeks as tolerated until reaching the target maintenance dose.

Q5: Does each Mounjaro pen deliver only one dose?

Yes. Each Mounjaro KwikPen contains a single pre-measured dose. After one subcutaneous injection, the pen is discarded. A new pen is used for each weekly injection.

Q6: Can Mounjaro 2.5mg be used with metformin?

Yes. Tirzepatide is frequently combined with metformin in type 2 diabetes management, providing complementary glycaemic control through different mechanisms. No significant drug interaction exists between the two.

Q7: What are the signs that Mounjaro is working?

Early signs include reduced hunger, feeling full sooner during meals, mild weight loss, and improved fasting blood glucose readings. These effects typically become more pronounced as the dose escalates.

    Q8: Does Mounjaro require refrigeration?

Unused pens must be refrigerated at 2–8°C. Once in use or at room temperature, the pen can be kept for up to 21 days at temperatures below 30°C. Never freeze Mounjaro pens.

Q9: Can I use Mounjaro if I have severe kidney disease?

Mounjaro can be used with caution in mild to moderate chronic kidney disease. In severe renal impairment, there is limited data. Your prescriber will weigh the benefit-risk profile and may choose an alternative.

Q10: Is Mounjaro approved for weight loss without diabetes?

Tirzepatide received FDA and EMA approval for chronic weight management (as Zepbound brand in the US) in adults with obesity or overweight with comorbidities, regardless of diabetes status. Prescribers may use either the Mounjaro or Zepbound formulation depending on market and indication.
