What Is Ivermectin Used For?
Ivermectin paralyses and kills a wide range of parasites โ both those living in or under the skin and those living in the intestine. It is one of the few medicines listed on the WHO's Model List of Essential Medicines for multiple different conditions.
- Scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei) โ including crusted/Norwegian scabies
- Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) when topical treatments have failed
- Onchocerciasis (river blindness) โ caused by Onchocerca volvulus
- Strongyloidiasis โ intestinal infection with Strongyloides stercoralis
- Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis) as part of mass drug administration programmes
- Cutaneous larva migrans โ hookworm larvae under the skin
Which Strength Do You Need?
Ivermectin dosing is weight-based. The standard antiparasitic dose is 150โ200 micrograms per kilogram of body weight. This means the strength you need depends on your weight, not the severity of the condition.
| Weight Range | Recommended Dose | Tablets to Take |
|---|---|---|
| 15โ24 kg | 3mg | 1 ร 3mg tablet |
| 25โ35 kg | 6mg | 1 ร 6mg tablet |
| 36โ50 kg | 9mg | 1 ร 3mg + 1 ร 6mg tablet |
| 51โ65 kg | 12mg | 1 ร 12mg tablet |
| 66โ79 kg | 12mg | 1 ร 12mg tablet |
| 80+ kg | 15โ18mg | 1 ร 12mg + 1 ร 6mg tablet |
These are approximate guides based on the standard 150โ200 mcg/kg dosing. Always follow the specific dose recommended by your doctor, as some conditions require different dosing protocols.
Which Brand Should You Choose?
We stock five Ivermectin brands โ Iverheal, Ivecop, Iversun, Iverjohn, and Vermact โ as well as Evimectin-A. All contain the same active ingredient. All are manufactured in GMP-certified facilities. The choice between them makes no therapeutic difference.
Having multiple brands available means we can almost always supply the dose you need, even when one brand has supply constraints. If the brand you ordered is temporarily unavailable, we will substitute with an equivalent brand at the same dose and inform you before dispatch.
Ivermectin for Scabies โ How It's Used
For conventional scabies, two oral doses of Ivermectin (200 mcg/kg) are typically given โ one on day 1 and a repeat dose 7โ14 days later. The repeat dose catches any newly hatched mites that survived the first treatment.
For crusted (Norwegian) scabies โ a more severe form โ treatment usually involves multiple doses combined with topical permethrin, under dermatologist supervision. Ivermectin reaches all skin areas systemically, including places topical creams may not penetrate.
How to Take Ivermectin
Ivermectin is most effective when taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, at least 1 hour before eating. For some conditions (like strongyloidiasis), a single dose is sufficient. For scabies, two doses spaced apart are standard.
- Take on an empty stomach โ food can reduce absorption
- Follow up at the recommended interval (day 7 or 14 for scabies)
- Wash all bedding, clothing, and towels after scabies treatment
- Treat all close contacts simultaneously to prevent re-infection
- Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment
